Eidfjord Cruise Port

Port of Eidfjord: An Overview

Tucked under the granite cliffs of Europe's largest mountain plateau and surrounded by an icy fjord and a river that's fly-fishing heaven for those in search of trout and salmon, this community of 900 residents in Western Norway is yards from the small pier and easily explored in an hour.

The Art Gallery N. Bergslien holds fascinating paintings by Norwegian painter Nils Bergslien (1853-1928), which depict the landscape and daily life of his time, while several shops sell local knitwear and crafts.

Most visitors head for the region's natural wonders, which can be viewed by bus tours, helicopters or an hourlong ride on the "troll train." The Eidfjord (pronounced "Ayd-fjord") tourist office offers information on easy-to-access hiking trails, as well as free Wi-Fi.

Don't Miss

Voringfossen Waterfall: Take a coach or bus tour 30 minutes outside town to the dramatic multi-tiered Voringfossen waterfall, which cascades approximately 600 feet into a stunning granite canyon below. Tours often include a stop at Hardangervidda Nature Center, too, which showcases the flora and fauna of the area, including wild reindeer (stuffed ones). Stop for coffee and waffles at the 19th-century Fossli Hotel overlooking the falls, where famed composer Edvard Grieg once stayed and wrote his Opus 66.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money

Norway's currency is the krone. Credit cards are widely accepted and an ATM can be found a few hundred feet from the pier, by the Coop supermarket just past the tourist office. For current currency conversion figures, visit www.xe.com.

Norwegian is the official language, but English is widely spoken.
