Norwegian Cruise Line Changes 'Free at Sea' Inclusions for Passengers in The Haven

(4 p.m. EDT) -- Passengers booked in The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line ships will now have to pay gratuities for dining and beverage packages included as part of the line's Free at Sea program.

The program, which allows passengers to pick perks based on stateroom category, previously allowed all cruisers booked in The Haven -- an enclave of the line's most expensive suites -- to receive all of the available perks for free, including gratuities. Effective June 6 for all new bookings, however, those passengers will be charged an 18 percent gratuity for both the dining and beverage packages. 

Other amenities like shore excursion credits, free Wi-Fi and free berths for third and fourth passengers in a cabin are still offered on a complimentary basis to passengers in The Haven.

"Our promotions change from time to time..." cruise line representative Vanessa Picariello said in a statement. "In order to ensure that we can continue to provide our Haven and Suites guests with all five choices, an 18 percent gratuity on the beverage and specialty dining packages will be the responsibility of the guest."

Travelers staying in The Haven can avoid the extra charges by opting out of the unlimited dining and beverage packages prior to sailing.

Passengers can also request a refund of any onboard gratuity charge by filling out a form post-cruise.
