Great cruise overall but we did not like the itinerary change.

Sail Date: May 2017
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona
We enjoyed our cruise but there just wasn’t enough time on board to enjoy the ships amenities and same thing for a couple of the ports. Our itinerary changed the day of the cruise and the day at sea was moved to the front end of the cruise, day 1 and 2. We did not like this as we did not have time to rest on the way back to Barcelona. We prefer our day at sea to be at the end of the cruise, this give up much more time to pack and rest. Fortunately we planned ahead and stayed 2 days in Barcelona before the cruise and 3 days at the end. The days were exhausting with getting into port at 7am and back on by 6:30pm left little time to enjoy dinner and any of the shows. There could have had more time in Rome and Florence because the ports are so far away from the Cities. Each is at least 1hr train or bus ride which leaves little time in Florence/Pisa or Rome to see much of anything without having to worry about making it back to the ship in time. In Rome we ended up leaving over More an hour late due to 11 people not being back on time and I believe 9 were left behind. I highly recommend paying for a ship excursion at both Rome and Florence to mitigate missing the ship. Over all Barcelona, Capri, Florence and Rome were amazing. We could have skipped Nice and Marseilles. If traveling from the US give yourself a couple of days in Barcelona prior to the cruise to adjust to the time change and be able to enjoy the beautiful culture and history. Also beware, they make it sound easy to get your euro tax refund but if you don’t know exactly what to do and follow the process just right you may end up having to run all over the airport to get the proper signatures and approvals. Arrive early to the airport and ask before you check your bags or go past the security/passport check area. Also save yourself some time and money and check prices on line vs. purchasing anything in the shops aboard the ship, you will save yourself time and money. I found everything they tried to hard sell me on the ship for 100s even 1000s less on Amazon. From watches to Perfumes and designer purses prices where much better in the Caribbean than in Europe both on board and at the ports. G in the Diamond Lounge was amazing and gave us great tips for each port. The dining in the main dining room has changed and RCL now charges for lobster and does not have a lobster dinner included in the main dining room, it now costs $35 US. Feels like the Cruise line is now getting into the same practice as the airline industry and has hidden fees for what used to be standard service. Less

Cabin review: E17592 Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Balcony

clean but a bit dated. Hasn't changed much since our first cruise on a Liberty class ship back in 2006. TV remote didn't work. Also you now have to pay for eggs, bacon or potatoes or other warm breakfast (American Breakfast) dishes for room service as they are no longer part of the free room service included prices.

Port and Shore Excursions

Florence & Pisa Tour

Easy day with excellent access on and off the ship. Our tour guide was helpful and friendly. Excellent piece of mind knowing that if there are any travel issues to and from the port the ship will wait for you. I wish we would have done this in Rome.

Nothing special, shopping is average, the train tour to the Notre Dame Grande is well worth it. Lunch at the port side is nice too.

Capri Walking Tour

Take the ferry from the port to Capri. From there it is easy to get around and you will save yourself a ton of cash. We found the best Pizza ever at a resturaunt at the top of the cable car. Ristorante Al Caprì - Don Alfonso Cafè

Plan to spend 1hr or more to get from the port to Rome. I highly recommend spending the money and taking the ship offered excursion just because of the time it takes to get to and from the ship. It may be pricy but you will have the comfort of knowing the ship will not leave you if you pay for a ship sponsored tour. There is a private bus from the ship to the terminal entrance, you then have to take a bus or taxi to the train station, this takes about 10 to 15 min, the trains leaving from Rome back to the port run late or get delayed so I suggest you get on the train back to the port by no later than 4:30pm. 9 people were left behind because they didn’t make it back on time

Shopping in department like or mall type stores and a lot of walking, nothing special, I recommend walking down to the beach and having lunch and a bottle of local wine on the sore of the Mediterranean Sea. easy train ride from the port to the city.
