NCL Spirit, not a good impression of our first cruise on NCL
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Rome (Civitavecchia)
We liked our choice of the Garden Restaurant for dinners. Before the cruise, when we made our reservations for dinner without knowing how long we would be in port each day, we selected 6:30 pm, so we would not miss the later evening show. Eventually, we changed our reservations to 7:30 since we found out the later show begins at 9:30. Why ask us to make reservations without prior knowledge of port times and showtime? We found the staff to be adequate although the people booking the cruise line tours had absolutely no knowledge of the tours they were booking. Repeatedly, we were told to read the descriptions, and More they could answer no questions about the tours. Terrible sales people. We went to the first explanation of the tours available in each cruise port but found the woman reading the descriptions to be unable to read the descriptions along with the pictures projected. She offered no tips. Other cruise lines offer sightseeing and shopping tips in each port. We did not go back for the next round.
We enjoyed the wait staff and our steward, BJ. Our two bottles of wine was confiscated out of our luggage and we received a nasty note which told us we had to pay of penalty of $15 a bottle to get it back! We expected to pay the corkage, but did not expect to be treated like criminals.
We were very disappointed in the quality of the pizza and there was a lack of fish at breakfast on the buffet. There were nuts daily on the breakfast buffet which was a positive and it seemed there was typical British and Indian foods. I noticed congee in the mornings along with breakfast foods typically enjoyed in the US. Ms Williams a Windows Restaurant hostess was quite pleasant in the mornings when we could eat in this quiet locale.
The cruise director did stop and speak to us once, but we found the information he imparted after the evening show to be lacking in times and just general information about the port city name the next day.
I went to BINGO once on a sea day, but did not go back. No one at the table selling packages could explain the process or the difference in the $39, $49 and $79 BINGO package. I wanted to know if it was a one time purchase or if it lasted for more than one game. I usually buy $10 or $20 one time use card. Why would anyone spend twice that much to play this game once? I still don't know.
The Spirit decor consisted of an Asian theme of terra-cotta warriors, but everything seemed worn and in need of updates. Instead of offering a daily paper map to carry with us including port highlights, a schoolchild like poster with maps and times was placed on deck seven for two thousand people to peruse, in English only.
There was no guest laundry for an eleven day cruise. You had to pay to have your clothing washed and had to pay again to have the same clothing pressed. Crazy.
Our impression of NCL Spirit is that the cruise line Is not on our return list due to the quality of the ship and the seemingly untrained, unaware staff. Less
