First cruise on Azamara : hope many others will follow!

Sail Date: May 2017
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Nice
First cruise on Azamara, after a lot of cruises on Cunard, and one cruise on Celebrity. I enjoyed this cruise very much.

Pros :

- Nice ship, with an elegant, but relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

- Excellent crew, always smiling and doing everything to make your cruise a total pleasure : I felt chilly during the italian buffet in Sorrento and suddenly, without asking anything, a warm blanket was delicately wrapped around my shoulders : divine!

- The cruiseline is "solo-friendly" (yes, it still exists!) low single supplement on some cruises, meetings, dinners.....

- Good food, with different venues, specialities buffets..... can't understand how it could be possible not to find some food to your taste. The restaurant managed my food allergies very well (thanks to Lailana, the best waitress I ever met)

- Good music, not too loud. Some people are complaining about entertainment on .Azamara : yes, the cabaret is small and you More won't see there spectaculars shows, but, personally, I really enjoyed the variety of entertainment : italian tenor in Sorrento, excellent Glenn Miller evening, originals shows from the ship's dancers and singers.

Cons :

- A change in the ittinerary because of a snap election in Malta (????) was a great disappointment for some of us, but, finally, Palma de Mallorca was more interesting than expected.

- The toiletries brand (yes, I know, it's ridiculous, but to elegant ship, elegant toiletries brand!). Very low key, with a quite nauseing "sugarly" scent : as my grandmother said "A good perfume or no perfume at all". Less

Cabin review: N18040 Club Continent Suite

Large cabin (suite) midship, bathtub, bed facing stern, sofabed for a third person. Spotless, thanks to the excellent work of Xavier, Remi and Carmelit, always so helpful. . Some little problems like very low drawers (impossible to use if you have back or knees pains!), The laundry line over the bathtub is a really good idea. One black point : cabin is on deck 8 and noisy at the beginning/end of the night, because just under pool deck (people walking heavily, running, scratching floor with chairs....) Sorry for all the mistakes in this review, english is not my motherlanguage.

Port and Shore Excursions

Very interesting but more than exhausting : about three hours to la Sagrada familia, standing, waiting, walking. Then 1h30 to La Pedrera, with hundreds of stairs! The guide was excellent and very knowledgeable, but seemed totally ignoring of lower materialistics necessities like restrooms (after three hours and a half, I firmly asked for!) or steeps stairs for seniors! Be careful, this excursion is absolutely impossible to do for people with any walking or standing problems.

Took the local bus from the port (Azamara docks in city center, no shuttle) to the station, took a train to Pisa Centrale, changed train to Lucca, beautiful medieval town. Then, train back to Pisa, stopped at Pisa San Rossore (station very close to the tower and field of miracles, 5mn walk) : beautiful, but a lot of silly tourists taking pictures of other silly tourists trying to sustain the tower! Took another train from Pisa San Rossore to Pisa centrale (5 mn trip) then another train to Livorno and the local bus from the station to the port : easier than it seems!

A peaceful day : after exiting pier, I took the lift in the parking (immediatly on the left) and began a wonderful walk on "Le chemin des pêcheurs" along the sea. Some elevators and lifts later, I reached the "musée océanographique" and visited the gorgeous gardens nearby. Then the Cathedral and finally, the palace and old Monaco.

A very good surprise : we were supposed to go to Malta but, because of a snap election, we went to Palma instead. Bad weather but a beautiful town : royal palace and cathedral. Azamazing evening in the cathedral.

Didn't want to spend 4hs in a bus to see Carcassonne : took the local bus to Collioure (7 mn bus trip), very nice town. Visit to the church and to the medieval Castle.

Colosseum

"Glory of the gladiators" : a good ship-excursion with an excellent guide. In the morning visit of the Colosseum and the Forum (a lot of people!). Then, 2h30 of free time on Piazza Navona for lunch and personnal visits : a very well balanced excursion.

Took the lift to the town, interesting visit of the cloister, some beautiful churches and museum. The museum itself is not really a "must do", but has a beautiful park and a belvedere with gorgeous views on the bay. Very pleasant to cross orange-trees fields before reaching it. The town itself is very busy and noisy.

Too expensive for a simple transfer, but, travelling solo, a taxi would be more. The town is beautiful, but crowded. A visit of the (relatively!) peaceful Municipal garden and, of course, the greek theater, spoiled with plastic chairs, but with the must beautiful views on the Taormina bay
