Gorgeous ship not sure about the food

Sail Date: May 2017
Destination: Baltic Sea
Embarkation: Stockholm
Viking Star is absolutely lovely, all blond wood and Scandinavian decor. The public rooms are varied and many. Be it the Winter Gardens or any of the bars, the service was good and friendly.

Our stateroom was well appointed but quite small, although we had a balcony there was not a great deal of storage and if we were going on a longer cruise, I would definitely go up a grade of cabin which has an extra chest of drawers. The bathroom was great with a nice heated floor. I would change the two small armchairs to a small sofa for more comfort. Our room steward (as with all cruises of this standard) was helpful, friendly and efficient.

Our main problem was the standard of food in the main Restaurant. We gave up after 3 dinners there. The food was so poor even my husband (who would eat anything!!) was complaining. One meal he had was just fat and bone. The waiting staff were very concerned and offered to exchange it but the exchange was no better. Who has ever been happy More with Chicken Kiev and GRAVY?? which I had one night. It's obvious that everything is plated and kept warm, the service is way too speedy for the food to be prepared as ordered( which I understand is difficult with such a large number of people to cater for but Cunard seem to manage a less production line approach) , the sauces have a skin on them and the taste and consistency of the dishes was poor.. We were so disappointed as we expected something fabulous. We thought Manfredi's was good and the World Cafe usually offered something to appeal to us. The beer and wine certainly flow at mealtimes which was lovely..

As rule we don't go to the entertainment in the evenings so cannot comment. The lectures were good but we did not attend all of them.

Shore excursions were good, the QuietVox boxes are a great help. Maybe put a sat map feature so one can explore oneself like Scenic do would be useful. The included tours were comprehensive and gave a good overview of where we were. We took the optional excursion to have lunch at the Reichstag in Berlin which exceptional. The food was the best we had in the whole two weeks.

We would certainly go Viking again but perhaps would eat ashore to get a meal which would suit us better. Less
