First time on Royal

Sail Date: May 2017
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Galveston
We were in a 3 family large group with 17 people. The cruise was arranged by a travel agent, but we still had to do all of the data-entry and check-in on lien with Royal. So I don't think using the travel agent added any value. Royal's web site has performance issues. It is often not available, and not very user friendly. It was very hard to link two rooms together on the same billing. Phone support was not able to help either so I had to get this fixed at check in.

The Port of Galveston is great for us because we can drive there an avoid airline fees, however the infrastructure of the port lacking. If there are two big ships unloading and loading on the same day expect major delays and a traffic nightmare.

Liberty of the Seas is a great ship. Very modern, excellent amenities, top notch entertainment. My only complaint is that there was a lot of construction going on, which blocked off some areas and caused noise.

On board dining : Our travel More agent was supposed to arrange all 17 of us to dine together, but did not. Once on board the Dining staff got to work moving things around so that we could be together starting the 2nd night. So while it was bad that the mistake happened, the staff recovered nicely. Our waiter at dinner was fantastic. We really enjoyed him. A major complaint about dining is that Royal has very limited dining options included in the base price. Most of your choices on board require extra fees. Even room service requires extra fees. The ice cream parlor required extra fees. Royal will nickle and dime you to death once you get on board.

We did shore excursions in Roatan and Cozumel. Both were excellent. Royal did a great job getting us off the ship quickly and onto the excursion. I wish we had done an excursion at Costa Maya as well.

We did not like how Royal does pictures. There are limited number of photographers setup, and the pictures are tied to your room in a package. So you basically either buy them all, or pay a very high price for just a few. We also had one photographer refuse to take our large group, but did nothing to help us find a better place for a big group picture.

Summary: Royal has a great ship with world class entertainment, but the higher cost and the constant pressure to buy upgrades on-board are not worth the higher cost compared to other cruise lines. I would sail with Royal again, if the cost of the cruise is the same as other cruise lines. I would not pay extra for the same cruise just to be on Royal. Less

Cabin review: FI7459 Family Interior Stateroom

Room was clean and everything worked. Only complaint is that the menu to see your bill is integrated into the TV, and it did not work all the time.

Port and Shore Excursions

Shopping requires good bartering skills. Vendors apply lots of pressure. Bring cash, be wary of scams.

Helmet Dive

I was not sure what to expect, but this turned out to be a great excursion. The staff was great, very safety conscious. They took lots of pictures, and drew in fish. Note that we had to pay cash for the pictures. The underwater experience is incredible. This is a great option for people who are not quite ready to try scuba diving..

Traffic flow is horrible at the Galveston Terminal.

Beach Day

Great location, with friendly helpful staff. Good beach, great snorkeling. Animal exhibits were very good. Lunch service was very good. Highly recommend this excursion.
